À découvert — In the open

In À découvert, a contemporary abstract painting by Mariclair Plante, light allows traces to surface and remain visible. Ivory whites and blue-grey passages create an expansive field, interrupted by dark marks, muted ochres and olive greens. Deep burgundy forms gather in the lower portion of the canvas, giving the eye somewhere to settle within this shifting space.

The painting unfolds through changes in visibility. Some gestures are direct and sharply defined; others recede beneath pale layers, their edges still perceptible. A fine line draws the eye across an open passage, while a thicker mark slows its movement. These encounters give the composition its rhythm, allowing breadth and density to coexist without either becoming dominant.

In the open suggests a presence willing to be seen with its roughness intact. Marks retain their irregularities, and forms remain available to more than one reading. The pale areas offer room around them, making each interruption more distinct. As the eye moves between exposed gestures and partially submerged traces, the painting reveals further points of contact. What first appears spacious gradually becomes more intimate, inviting sustained attention without yielding a fixed account of itself.
